Hey Everyone, this week’s Desktop Tuesday comes to you from Yang, who has implemented Tree Planting in Stonehearth! All you scourges of forests, rejoice; there is now a way to repopulate your denuded woods, grow your own lumber, and pretty-up your towns with decorative foliage.
Onward, to Tree Planting!
Originally, we thought that tree planting would involve re-working the farmer’s fields to allow for growing arbitrary-sized plants (region math, youch!), but Yang pointed out that people grow saplings in farms and then transfer them via tubs to their target location all the time… so that’s what we’re doing now. Huzzah for easier ways to reduce the collective hearthling carbon footprint!
This is an early preview, so all the art assets in the screenshots below are placeholder.
Tree planting starts with a new crop: the sapling. We will offer different saplings for different types of trees:
Farmers plant saplings as usual, and wait for them to reach an appropriate size for independent living:
Then, they harvest the saplings into tubs:
Which can be placed in the world as usual:
After the trees are placed, they will grow until they reach their full size:
Implications to existing houses, farms, and other objects, still TBD.
You can look for tree planting in Alpha 12!
